Sustainable design does not only include using ecologically sound materials, but highly involves efficient use of materials during the design and production process that result in minimal waste.
The Economical chair by Seungji Mun is constructed from a single standard 4’x8’ (10x20cm) plywood board, with no scrap material. An inexpensive and low waste process created via plywood bending techniques.
It is an impressively clever example of efficient use of material as an approach to sustainable design for mass production, but not to neglect that the wood used is factory-produced plywood boards that maybe a result of an industrial wasteful process to begin with!
The chairs are surely a good example that can pave the way for design that minimizes the industrial waste of mass production.
